Riding the wave: Lila Zing

With the radiant, ethereal jazz of her latest single, ‘ripple’, singer-songwriter Lila Zing is swimming against the current of the modern world

Buoying between jazz, funk and bossa nova, flow is made to look easy on Lila's third release. Out since 7th June, ‘ripple’ is fuelled by soothing expressions and meditative grooves, resulting in an all-at-once feeling of “reconnection and realignment”. “The track is about fully experiencing and understanding all of your emotions without suppressing them — being true to yourself,” says the self-taught producer from Pen Llŷn.

Building on the momentum generated by debut drops, ‘silence + space’ and ‘la di la’, ‘ripple’ is the perfect antidote to everyday’s pressures, where focus is regained and clarity restored. Expressiveness can be found throughout Lila’s growing pool of tracks but is perhaps accentuated on her latest release: “Growing up near the ocean, the coast will always feel like home to me. I take inspiration from the sea and its healing power and that’s where this track came from,” she adds.

Born out of self-growth, both personally as well as musically, the singer-songwriter shares: “I believe emotional and nervous system regulation is a natural, healthy practice we should all do. I learned a lot about this through cold water dipping, which I do frequently in the ocean and nearby lakes and rivers. It forces you to confront yourself and to not shy away from the darker places within yourself — it is a very powerful exercise. ‘ripple’ also reflects our connection to nature.”

Freshly announced as one of Georgia Ruth’s hand-picked artists to open the Settlement stage at next month’s Green Man Festival, Lila reveals: “I have an exciting summer ahead and cannot wait to perform at my first festival in August. I have also been in the studio working on a new single with producer, Don Leisure, and some other incredible musicians so I’m very excited to share that one closer to the end of summer.”

Lila Zing — along with rising artists, Talulah and WRKHOUSE — will perform at Green Man on Monday 12th August, with the festival’s full Settlement line-up to be announced this Friday 5th July. Both meditative and expressive, catch Lila’s latest single here:
