Emyr Sion’s delicious double-single: ‘Addfwyn x Japanese Car’
Emyr Sion of West Wales makes a bracing first impression with his ubiquitously delicious double-single ‘Addfwyn x Japanese Car’.
Finding his voice as the world returned to normality, the tracks are a homage to the folk and country-dappled rock of the 1970s, and the elegiac music of lo-fi psychedelia. Lying beneath the dulcet delivery however is a wistful, melancholic drawing of Emyr’s personal battle with anxiety and his restless resentment towards growing older. Boasting a plethora of musical projects, notably ARGRPH and Los Blancos, Emyr Sion is a multi-instrumentalist by day, songwriter by night — who carves inner introspections against a dreamy, elegant backdrop.
Unconstrained by the idea of sharing his more intimate experiences through song, he writes honestly, often explicitly about his self-deprecating thoughts — with topics including loneliness, regret and self-control frequently touched upon. Cutting open his vulnerable musings, he admits that the singles may have been confined to his bedroom hadn't it been for his band’s brotherhood and encouragement to release. Also addressing the importance of speaking out about mental health, Emyr points towards the singles as “therapy through darker times”. Blending widely-spaced guitar flourishes with woozy basslines and swirling melodies, Emyr Sion’s double a-side is a bittersweet experience that will leave you fully immersed.
