WRKHOUSE unleash debut single, ‘Getaway’

Fresh from their debut drop last Friday, WRKHOUSE share the profound new music video for ‘Gateway’

Rather than dwelling upon their irrevocable catalogue opener last Friday — launching a culmination of four years of behind-the-scenes work — WRKHOUSE advance simultaneously through the gears, immediately shifting their attention to the accompanying music video for debut track, ‘Getaway’. Attacking the template set out by their musical milieu, which include indie luminaries Foals, Gengahr, and Nothing But Thieves, WRKHOUSE’s first release is an unapologetic statement single that lays down the foundations for the four-piece’s sonic blueprint.

First honing their sound with Steffan Pringle at Mwnci Studios (Estrons, Adwaith) and later Mark Gardener (Ride) at OX4 Sound back in 2020, WRKHOUSE went on to mix with Ed Al-Shakarchi (Boy Azooga, The Bug Club, Loathe) at his locked-away studio near Newport during summer 2023. Fast forward a year, and the band already have sold out shows at Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach, The Deaf Institute Manchester, The Victoria Dalston London, and a mainstage slot at Lakefest 2023 tucked under their belt.

Born initially out of frustration — then hunger — to find the balance between change and acceptance, ‘Getaway’ tells a story from the dual perspectives of a seemingly hopeless relationship, the lyrics depict a poignant tale where, despite enduring pain and grief, the protagonists return to each other, almost in surrender. “We’ve been through a lot with this song,” explains lead singer, Lewys Meredydd, “we’ve been writing and performing together since 2018, but this marks a brand new chapter for us after our rebrand from being solely Welsh language to leaning towards bilingualism.”

Working with director, Lewys Mann, and Trigger Happy Creative to bring their visual ideas to life, the music video is a distinct extension to ‘Getaway’s manifesto of soaring synths and raging drums. Lewys adds: “We shot this, along with another video, all in one day last April at Firebug Studios in Barry, with Trigger Happy Creative, in the belief that everything else would be ready to go by autumn 2023. We were so wrong. We’ve hit plenty of roadblocks along the way since we decided to rebrand in 2020, and so much has changed for us both personally and as a band over the course of putting this project together — it feels very cathartic to be letting these tracks go one by one.”

Hailing originally from Dolgellau, Bangor, and Pen-Y-Bont-Fawr — now scattered across Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester, WRKHOUSE are ready to drip-feed details on their long-awaited EP over the coming months. “I think the general idea for these videos was that they could be a solid visual foundation for us to build upon over the coming months — a solid, well-put-together introduction for our new direction,” recalls Lewys.
