Omaloma’s ‘Swish’ is a hypnotic synth-soaked time capsule
Inimitable in complexion, evaporative in energy and ethereal in delivery; a stylistically profound marker of shoegaze synthesis. Continuing in the same vein as lead single ‘Walk the Dog’, Omaloma’s ever-anticipated album of luxuriously indulgent neo-psychedelia has certainly delivered.
Facile and soothing, the shallow siren-esque opener ‘L O G O’ melts lavishly into the melodic-longing ‘Spring Break’ and ‘Bon Voyage’ with liquid perpetuation. Amid the warmth, there’s an air of melancholy and misery surrounding ‘Tra Gwahanol’ as the motion of loneliness and boredom are fittingly, flirted with. Recorded in isolation, the passive lugubrious sound provides Swish with painstaking depth and texture which was perhaps overlooked in previous work. As we progress onto the therapeutic trio of ‘Super Melys’, ‘Jelly Bear’ and ‘Baby G’, the concept of time is neglected – the dreamlike wooziness embodying a comforting dense duvet.
Album-highlight ‘Romeo’ restores some calmness amidst a turbulent world as the syncopation of each placid wave divorces the state of existence between two conceptual pillars: procrastination and hesitation. Untethered from the 4-minute glass-ceiling, the stripped-back marathon ‘U.V.’ warrants its length as the concluding serenity is simply, blissfully-boundless. Omaloma’s debut album will establish itself as an idiosyncratic vehicle of present stillness.
