Sŵnami share shimmering new single ‘Wyt Ti’n Clywed?’

‘Wyt Ti’n Clywed?’ is the fifth and latest preview of the five-piece’s second album ‘Sŵnamii’, due to arrive on 2 December via Recordiau Côsh Records.

Indicative of Sŵnami’s shimmering synth-heavy sound, ‘Wyt Ti’n Clywed?’ is the latest piece in the jigsaw ahead of their highly anticipated second album, titled ‘Sŵnamii’. Finally pulling the curtain on new material — incorporating new singles ‘Theatr’, ‘Uno, Cydio, Tanio’, ‘Be Bynnag Fydd’ and ‘Paradis Disparu’ in Summer setlists — Sŵnami represent the grief, anxiety, and escapism of youth today through swirling dream-pop, fluctuating between the mellow and the driven. Going a step further than their debut’s closing track ‘La Tramontana’ — an ode to a fanciful hotel in the Basque region — each track on Sŵnami’s forthcoming album represents "a hotel room, each reflecting different stories at different points in our lives”. Gruff (synths) explains: “There’s some nostalgia, some breakdowns but it still all feels like Sŵnami”.

Translating as ‘Can You Hear?’, latest single ‘Wyt Ti’n Clywed?’ is a portfolio of emotions that transcends from a light, joyous chorus to a melancholy lyrical undertone as it details a sudden breakdown in a personal relationship, and the denial of knowing when to let go of hope. Lead singer and guitarist Ifan Davies adds: “The song came to fruition fairly quickly, after Gruff came over for a writing session earlier this year. Sometimes you can spend months working on something and searching for inspiration, and sometimes you can spend 10 minutes — this one was the latter. The song's energy is a complete contrast to its lyrics, and we knew right away that this would be the album's closing track”. A band never afraid to explore their own insecurities through songwriting, ask “Can you hear yourself? Can you see that you’re not fooling anyone? You have to let go”.

Proudly stating the track as “much closer to what Sŵnami always wanted and needed to sound like”, ‘Wyt Ti’n Clywed?’ possesses pristine arrangements and serene vocals. Seven years in the making, the album as a whole is a blend of tender guitar licks with shoe-shuffling melodies, capturing a sound that entwines the transitory chaos of a 20-something year old in Wales at eleven different crossroads in life. From their carefully calculated riffs to their vibrant visuals, Sŵnami helped to shape the Welsh music scene as we know it today, inspiring a generation along the way, and are now set to embark on their second chapter ‘Sŵnamii’.
